Beyond updating some worn finishes, the owners desired to upgrade their existing kitchen to accommodate their growing family and love of cooking. Their particular needs included: creating enough counterspace for all four family members to work at the same time, adding a full-size refrigerator, adding a second oven, adding a vent hood over the range to replace the existing downdraft, and increasing the daylighting and views to the exterior. An existing brick chimney was removed to make way for counterspace. A side door to the driveway was removed and the side porch was enclosed to create space for a full-size refrigerator. The old refrigerator alcove now houses pantry space, a recycling center and a second oven. The existing window was replaced and another window was added. About 2/3 of the existing cabinetry was retained and repainted.
