The existing basement storage rooms along with unfinished crawl space were remodeled and finished to create a new guest suite and home office. As a recently retired professor of Italian and French Renaissance literature, the client requested that the architecture of the space reflect his love of Renaissance design and incorporate his collection of artwork and antique furniture. The highly enjoyable and collaborative design process results in a progression of formal spaces with extensive detailing. The new library includes two full walls of custom walnut cabinetry, shelving, and desk. The extensive guest suite includes a sitting area, bedroom, dressing room, large walk-in closet, and full bath with a walk-in tile shower. Matching the dining room ceiling on the main floor, the new tray ceilings utilize the full height of the room, while bringing the room down to a human scale. Windows are added throughout all of the spaces maximizing daylighting and the views to the natural backyard.
